Jason Garcia transferred to 60-day disabled list (O's win 5-3)

The roster moves are official.

The Orioles reinstated pitcher Kevin Gausman from the 15-day disabled list and selected reliever Mychal Given's contract from Double-A Bowie. Givens will wear No. 60.

The Orioles also optioned pitchers Mike Wright and Tyler Wilson to Norfolk. Wright threw 48 pitches in 1 1/3 innings last night and no longer has a spot in the rotation. Gausman starts today, Miguel Gonzalez starts Thursday in Boston and Wei-Yin Chen starts Friday against the Indians at Camden Yards.

Wilson threw 78 pitches last night while holding Toronto to one run over 5 2/3 innings.

Gausman, 24, was placed on the DL May 8 with right shoulder tendinitis. He made three rehab appearances with Single-A Frederick and Bowie, going 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings.

In eight games with the Orioles this season, Gausman is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA over 12 innings.

Givens, drafted in 2009 as a shortstop, is 3-1 with a 1.60 ERA and 12 saves in 23 appearances at Bowie, with 11 walks and 54 strikeouts in 39 1/3 innings. Manager Buck Showalter has been raving about Givens' upper-90s fastball and secondary pitches, saying the club didn't need to move him up to Triple-A Norfolk before promoting him to the majors. Givens was deemed ready at Double-A.

Givens posted a season-long, seven-game scoreless streak over 11 innings on May 23-June 11. In 87 career minor league games as a pitcher, Givens went 6-6 with a 3.20 ERA and 18 saves.

Givens would be the 999th player to appear in a game for the Orioles. No, not this season. He also would be the sixth to make his major league debut this year and the first ever from the 2009 draft class. Tim Berry, a 50th-round selection, never got into a game.

Garcia, 22, was placed on the 15-day disabled list May 13 with right shoulder tendinitis. He's only progressed to throwing a bullpen session.

Note: The Orioles signed three more draft picks, raising their total to 28: catcher Christopher Shaw (15th round), shortstop Branden Becker (17th) and right-hander Christian Turnipseed (28th).

Update: Gausman made it through five innings, throwing 91 pitches, and the Orioles tied the score 2-2 in the sixth on Delmon Young's shallow sacrifice fly to left field that brought home Manny Machado.

Machado and Travis Snider each have two hits today. Snider's ground rule double in the sixth moved Machado to third base.

Update II: Darren O'Day escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the eighth, Caleb Joseph delivered an RBI single in the ninth to break a 2-2 tie and Manny Machado followed with a two-run double to give the Orioles a 5-3 win over the Jays.

The Orioles are 29-4 when Joseph has an RBI in his career.

Zach Britton converted his 15th consecutive save and 19th overall after allowing a run on three hits - including two infield singles.
