Miley's first start and more on Rickard injury (O's lead 3-0)

Orioles left-hander Wade Miley demonstrated today that his pickoff move is still on point. He's just got to work on regaining his control.

Miley caught Matt Holliday leaning toward second - and many feet off the bag - to end the first inning after a two-out walk. Miley retired Brett Gardner on a fly ball and struck out Aaron Hicks.

Miley threw 13 pitches in his first inning of the 2017 season and 28 more in the second while walking Chris Carter, Aaron Judge and Austin Romine to load the bases. Ronald Torreyes struck out on a 93 mph fastball to keep the game scoreless.

The day began with Miley coming off the disabled list and outfielder Joey Rickard taking his place with a sprained left middle finger.

"Pretty stiff and sore today," said manager Buck Showalter. "Sliding into second last night. Richie (Bancells) and the guys brought it in last night after the game. We were actually meeting about the move when Richie came in.

"Just talked to Joey in there with his hand in the whirlpool. It's unfortunate, but I think we're fortunate that it might not be much more than 10 days. It's actually one of those injuries where if it was the 15-day DL you might think about waiting half the time, but it also could linger and be the full 15."

It hasn't been determined whether Rickard will need an injury rehab assignment.

"I don't think so," Showalter said. "It depends how quickly he can get a bat back on his hand. If we get fortunate and some of the soreness and pain is gone in five or six days, seven days ... We're taking him with us to Boston. It would be fortunate, but it's still a possibility. I'm hoping we won't need that rehab assignment."

The Orioles were facing a tough roster decision with an extra reliever and position player on the roster.

"We were all getting ready to sit down and have a long final discussion about how we were going to do it and that kind of shortened that meeting," Showalter said. "I have a pretty good idea what we would have done and it didn't involve Joey. That's for sure.

"It weakens our bench. Try not to have Joey and Craig (Gentry), even though I would play them in the same game and probably was going to do it on the road, just to get some guys a day. But really, you look at our bench today compared to what it was against left-handed pitchers, it's a little different look. We've been spoiled with that extra player."

"I haven't heard yet, which is good news," Showalter said. "I think we would have heard something because they're there early at the extended spring program, so I'm going to take that as good news."

Tillman will throw two innings and 30 pitches Tuesday in an extended spring training game in Sarasota before reporting to Double-A Bowie.

Update: The Orioles scored twice off CC Sabathia in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Mark Trumbo walked, took third on Chris Davis' double and scored on Trey Mancini's fielder's choice grounder, and J.J. Hardy delivered an RBI single after Jonathan Schoop walked.

Caleb Joseph, searching for his first RBI since Sept. 11, 2015, grounded to third base with two runners in scoring position and one out. Craig Gentry struck out.

Update II: Mark Trumbo's RBI single in the fifth increased the Orioles lead to 3-0. Adam Jones singled and moved up on a passed ball before Trumbo's second hit of the day.

Miley threw 100 pitches in five scoreless innings. He allowed one hit, tied his career high with seven walks and struck out five.

Miley also walked seven batters on April 27, 2013 with the Diamondbacks and July 2, 2015 with the Red Sox.

Tyler Wilson is working the sixth inning.
