Wade Miley produced one of the strangest final lines in recent memory. Don't try it at home.
Miley shut out the Yankees on one hit over five innings, but he tied his career high with seven walks. He also struck out five batters and departed with his pitch count at 100 - 56 for strikes.
The left-hander also walked seven on April 27, 2013 for the Diamondbacks and on July 2, 2015 for the Red Sox.
The plate kept moving and the Yankees kept wasting opportunities to score. They wouldn't break through until after he left the game.
Miley walked Matt Holliday in the first, third and fifth innings. He walked the bases loaded in the second, but Ronald Torreyes struck out on a 93 mph fastball. Chris Carter struck out and Starlin Castro grounded into a force after Miley issued two walks in the third.
You get the idea.
Aaron Hicks singled with two outs in the fifth for the only hit off Miley and Holliday walked again, but Carter grounded out.
Miley did retire the side in order in the fourth, throwing only 13 pitches while striking out Chase Headley, inducing a ground ball from Aaron Judge and retiring Austin Romine on a liner to second baseman Jonathan Schoop.
Miley's first start of the 2017 season was a wild ride, but he left with the Orioles leading 3-0. That's what really matters.
The bullpen must cover the last four innings. Orioles relievers began the day with a streak of 16 2/3 scoreless innings in the first four games, but Tyler Wilson surrendered a two-run triple to Torreyes in the sixth to end the streak and reduce the lead to 3-2.
Aaron Judge and Romine singled with two outs before Torreyes stepped to the plate and found the gap in right-center field.
Brett Gardner struck out seconds after manager Buck Showalter phoned the bullpen and Mychal Givens removed his jacket.
The Orioles scored twice off Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia in the second, with Trey Mancini and J.J. Hardy collecting the RBIs on a fielder's choice and single, respectively. Mark Trumbo had an RBI single in the fifth after Adam Jones singled and moved up on a passed ball.
Trumbo leads the club with five RBIs.
Update: Miley won't get the decision. Aaron Judge homered off Mychal Givens leading off the eighth to tie the score 3-3.
Update II: Darren O'Day walked the first two batters he faced in the ninth and Starlin Castro singled to score pinch-runner Jacoby Ellsbury and give New York a 4-3 lead.
Orioles pitchers have issued 10 walks today.
Update III: Another run scored off O'Day on Aaron Judge's grounder to Chris Davis, who fell while fielding the ball and settled for the out at first, and two more came across on Austin Romine's long sacrifice fly to right and Jonathan Schoop's throwing error on the relay. Yankees 7, Orioles 3
Vidal Nuno is making his Orioles debut.
O'Day walked three batters to raise the Orioles' total to 11.
