Strasburg shelled early, lasts only 1 2/3 (Rockies win 12-10)

DENVER - Coors Field is probably not the place to shake off a couple of tough outings.

Right-hander Stephen Strasburg had allowed 10 earned runs in his last two starts. Wednesday's first inning did not get better for the Nationals ace.

It got worse.

The Rockies' first six men reached base on four hits and two walks. One of the big hits came from Gerardo Parra, who laced a three-run double that bounced up against the wall in right-center.

Nolan Arenado had a run-scoring single and catcher Tony Wolters delivered an RBI double, and then the opposing pitcher Jon Gray slapped a two-run double to right field.

The seven runs were the most the Nats have allowed in any inning this season, as the Rockies sent 11 men to the plate and pounded out six hits.

Strasburg has now allowed 17 runs in his last 11 innings. DJ LeMahieu is 8-for-8 in the series.

After one, the Broncos lead the Redskins 7-0...oh, wait.

Update: The Nationals got on the board in the second inning on an RBI double from Anthony Rendon and a run-scoring single by Brian Goodwin.

But in the bottom of the frame, the Rockies chased Strasburg with an RBI triple by Parra, who now has four RBIs in the game, and a run-scoring single from Ben Paulsen. Koda Glover, who was on an airplane at 6 a.m. EST, arrived and recorded the final out of the inning.

Strasburg lasted 1 2/3 innings, allowing nine runs on nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts. He threw 71 pitches, 46 for strikes. Strasburg has now gone 5 1/3 innings or less in three consecutive starts.

The nine earned runs are the most runs Strasburg has ever allowed in a game. In July of 2013, an 8-3 loss at Miami, Strasburg lasted only two innings while surrendering seven runs.

After two innings, the Rockies lead the Nationals 9-2.

Update II: The Nationals chipped away with two runs in the fourth. Pinch-hitter Wilmer Difo contributed a run-scoring single and Trea Turner added a sacrifice fly RBI. The Rockies lead 9-4 after three and a half at Coors Field.

Update III: The Nationals took another step to get back in this thing thanks to a massive two-run shot by Bryce Harper to enter field off of Christian Bergman. It was Harper's 21st of the season. The Rockies lead is now 9-6 over the Nationals.

Update IV: The Rockies tallied three runs in fifth, highlighted by a Tony Wolters solo homer. The Nationals scored a run on a wild pitch that plated Turner in the sixth and later the first major homer, a pinch-hit round tripper in the seventh. The Rockies lead the Nationals 12-8.

Update V: Turner triple for the sixth time in 30 games to begin the eighth. Jayson Werth brought him home with a sacrifice fly. The Rockies lead 12-9 over the Nationals.

Update VI: Chris Heisey hit his seventh homer of the season, a solo shot with two outs in the ninth.

The Rockies win the series with a 12-10 victory over the Nationals before 25,308 at Coors Field.

Strasburg is 2-4 with a 7.75 ERA in his last six starts. He has allowed 17 earned runs in his last three starts.

The series loss is the first for the Nats since losing two of three to the Padres July 22-4. It is the Nats first road series loss since June 24-26 at Milwaukee.
