This, that and the 40-man roster

I'm 51-34 picking NFL games against the spread this season. Is that good? Double-A Bowie first baseman Joe Mahoney, playing in his second Arizona Fall League game yesterday, went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored for the Mesa Solar Sox. He's hitting .600 with seven RBIs in two games. And his error total held at four. Xavier Avery, starting in center field, went 0-for-2 with two walks, a run scored and his first error. He's batting .077. FOXSports.com's Jon Paul Morosi tweeted yesterday that former Orioles reliever Koji Uehara could be left off the Rangers' World Series roster if right-hander Mark Lowe is deemed healthy. Uehara has allowed five runs and five hits, including three home runs, in 1 1/3 postseason innings over three appearances. I wrote yesterday that reliever Jeremy Accardo refused his outright assignment and became a free agent. So did pitcher Mitch Atkins, if you're keeping score at home. The Orioles' 40-man roster is down to 39 with Accardo's removal last week. Here are the names: Pitchers Brad Bergesen Jason Berken Zach Britton Dylan Bundy Willie Eyre Kevin Gregg Jeremy Guthrie Tommy Hunter Chris Jakubauskas Jim Johnson Brian Matusz Troy Patton Zach Phillips Clay Rapada Jo-Jo Reyes Alfredo Simon Pedro Strop Chris Tillman Rick VandenHurk Pedro Viola Catchers Jake Fox Craig Tatum Matt Wieters Infielders Ryan Adams Robert Andino Josh Bell Chris Davis Pedro Florimon Jr. J.J. Hardy Cesar Izturis Joe Mahoney Mark Reynolds Brandon Snyder Outfielders Matt Angle Kyle Hudson Adam Jones Nick Markakis Nolan Reimold Designated Hitter Vladimir Guerrero The Orioles will have to make room for three players on the 60-day disabled list: Pitcher Jake Arrieta, second baseman Brian Roberts and outfielder Luke Scott. Scott is a non-tender candidate. Guerrero and Izturis are expected to leave as free agents. Eyre and Reyes are arbitration-eligible and could be non-tendered. Snyder might have run out of chances. VandenHurk is out of options, which again makes him a candidate to be designated for assignment. And I don't think manager Buck Showalter is sold on Simon and Fox. It shouldn't be too difficult to clear space, no matter who's sitting in Andy MacPhail's old office. Speaking of which, Jerry Dipoto interviews today and Tony LaCava gets his chance tomorrow. We're still waiting to find out whether the Orioles were granted permission to contact Marlins assistant general manager Dan Jennings. That's the Big Three.
